** Kent County Show 2014 **

11 – 13 July 2014

Our Poultry Section at Kent County Show exceeded all our expectations. Committee came up with the theme and ideas… what we hadn’t anticipated was the amount of enthusiasm and involvement from some truly wonderful members and friends who helped make this such a special event.

To commemorate the Centenary of WW1 it was decided to stage a “Poultry between the Wars” theme to include the breeds of poultry that were used to revitalise the poultry industry between and after the World Wars.

Fred Hams very kindly loaned part of his vast collection of poultry memorabilia, there were some wonderful articles and original certificates of merit for egg laying trials dating back to the 20s and 30s. David Simmonds and Richard Marshall also added some wonderful pieces to the tables which included ration books, newspapers and other poultry related items.

Then of course we would need volunteers to dress as Land Girls and Poultry men of the era. Top it off with some wartime music and we were transported back in time!

We also thought it would be fitting to fundraise for Help for Heroes. The general public were so generous with their donations. We have some lovely memories of young children having their photos taken with the poultry. Their mums and dads were brilliant!

The Interactive area is a huge attraction and the poultry that are chosen have to be very docile and patient. They are the stars of the marquee! So many children and also adults these days have never had the opportunity to touch a chicken.

Thank you to the very generous owners of those birds who made the area the attraction that the public enjoy so much.

We held an Egg Auction on Sunday afternoon also to add to the donations and were thrilled to be able to hand Help for Heroes the sum of £720.00

Those of you who were involved know just how much hard work goes into this event. We owe a huge thank you those people who gave up their time and threw themselves wholeheartedly into the fray!

There were many long days and sleepless nights, but the ideas and inspiration all culminated in Kent Poultry Club achieving the title of Best Agricultural Trade Stand for the second year in succession.

We would also like to thank Kent County Agricultural Society for their help and support. None of this would be possible without their continuing generosity. It is a pleasure to be part of Kent County Show and to stage an event of this calibre to showcase the hobby of poultry keeping to the general public.

POULTRY SHOW REPORT
Our judges for the day were Mr Richard Rowley and Miss Kerry Wilson.
They were delighted with the quality of birds forward and thoroughly enjoyed their day.
The one abiding memory of the show has to be Richard singing “Sally” to the birds as he took photographs…. You had to be there to believe it !!

A report on the show by Richard Rowley will appear in Fancy Fowl in the near future.

OPEN EGG SHOW REPORT
Fred Hams came up with the innovative idea for our Poultry and Eggs section at Kent County Show. The idea being to put together an Egg Show similar to those staged by Max Butler many years ago.

Over the last 3 years this has proved a great success having gone from the original classes which were aimed at the commercial egg producer to classes which cater for all.

We hope with the amount of entries this year that we may be able to apply for a stand alone Poultry Club Regional Egg Show.
Sadly one of our judges had to pull out due to family illness. We would like to thank Caroline Hadley for stepping in at short notice.
Thank you to all our judges for their sterling work, especially the tasting!
